Indian Art

Dhoomimal has been synonymous with fine Indian art for over seventy years. The Dhoomimal art legacy began in the early 1930’s when the late Ram Chand Jain opened India’s first art gallery at Connaught Place, in the heart of New Delhi’s capital district. The gallery garnered immediate praise from India’s many talented art masters who were finally given a proper forum and showcase to exhibit their paintings. Dhoomimal quickly became the hub of the Indian art world, representing artists from all corners of the nation. Throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s, Dhoomimal Gallery continued to establish itself as a stronghold in India, collecting and representing the nation’s most prominent artists, including Shanti Dave, Bimal Das Gupta, M.F. Husain, Ram Kumar, Sohan Qadri, Jamini Roy, and F.N. Souza.

With the passing of Ram Chand Jain in 1954, the Dhoomimal institution was handed over to his six sons who continued in their father’s footsteps. The gallery continued to flourish in the forthcoming decades as it became an indelible foundation in the history of Indian art. By the late 1970’s Ram Chand Jain’s youngest son, Ashok Jain, set his eyes on the American art market and the promotion of Indian art in New York. In 1980, Ashok Jain established A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery, an institution that has since been committed to exhibiting and representing fine artworks from prominent and emerging artists alike. The gallery has come to offer an extensive collection of contemporary artwork with artists from Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery has represented many fine artists at the international art fairs in Belgium, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New York, Switzerland, Tokyo and Yokohama. In addition, the gallery’s artists have been featured in Art in America, ArtNews, Asian Art Now, World Art, Art & Asia Pacific and The New York Times.

The new millennium has witnessed a surge in the popularity of Indian art, both in India and abroad. With the emergence of India as a major world market and power, Indian artists have continued to garner much recognition. The Dhoomimal institution recently celebrated its seventieth anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the Indian art market. In commemoration of this landmark, A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery is bringing the works of many of India’s most prominent art masters to the United States through an exceptional series of exhibitions that will introduce new generations to India’s greatest artists.
