Artist Statement:

Anders Lenes, born in coastal  Norway, created art from a very young age. He combined this  passion  with the most traditional  of Norwegian sports, cross country skiing,  becoming a  World championship level athlete with three Olympics on his resume.

The sport and his art brought him to the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Anders now lives in Canmore, Alberta with his wife and two sons, dedicating his time to his art.

In his art, Lenes has successfully hybridized the concerns of the painter, for colour and shape; with that of the sculptor, for volume and form.  Lenes follows in the tradition of  Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, who also expressed the raw human emotion of his time. Like Munch, Lenes is not as concerned with the superficial reality of the eye, but with what he sees with his mind and feels with his heart. Lenes’ aim is to move people intensely, however, he remains sensitive to his subject and his audience.

In the words of the Canadian author Northrope Frye, the role of the artist is, “to articulate human imagination as it extends from the height of imaginative heaven to the depth of imaginative hell.” In much of his work, Lenes does just that.

With a reputation as a colourist, Anders has exhibited his art extensively over the years  in Canada, Scandinavia and the United States. His works are in numerous private collections.
